Mechanism of Action of Chlorophyllin against Mitomycin-C Mutagenicity in Allium cepa

Abstract: Summary Chlorophyllin (CHL), a salt derivative of chlorophyll, has been demonstrated to be a potent agent against the deleterious action of different classes of mutagens. However, this effect depends largely on the test system, dose and conditions in which CHL is employed. The aim of this study was to examine in Allium cepa the toxic, cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of CHL and its capacity to inhibit such effects induced by the mutagenic agent mitomycin-C (MMC), under conditions of pre-treatment, post-treatmen… Show more

“…These, among other agents, can lead to the appearance of cellular abnormalities (Rigonato et al, 2004). Therefore, we verified the need to develop preventive strategies by means of studies that identify substances with chemoprotective potential for the genetic material (De Flora and Ferguson, 2005).…”

“…This event is based on the principle that the growth of roots is inhibited when they are exposed to toxic substances (Fiskesjö, 1993a(Fiskesjö, ,b, 1994Rigonato et al, 2004). According to the reference values of Fiskesjö (1993a), the MIs that were calculated in the mutagenicity protocols show that the inulin does not have genotoxic activity in any of the three concentrations.…”

“…Furthermore, Cardoso et al (2014), Neves et al (2014), Barbério et al (2009), Sturbelle et al (2008, and Rigonato et al (2005) classify the A. cepa test system as very efficient for the initial evaluation of the cytotoxic, mutagenic and antimutagenic potential of natural products.…”
