Mechanical strength of bio-coke from briquettes

Abstract: Cokes made from briquettes composed of a high volatile bituminous coal combined with four different biomasses and four different binders were analyzed in order to evaluate the influence of these materials on their mechanical strength. The results presented in this work are part of a more extensive research plan aimed at widening the range of alternative raw materials that can be included in coking blends. The briquettes were studied by means of proximate and elemental analyses and density evaluation, whereas t… Show more

“…Some authors [17,18] have experimented with coal replacement by charcoal between 2-10% in cokemaking, stating that no important degradation of final biocoke's mechanical strength took place, achieving 1-5% CO 2 net emissions reduction. New discoveries such as using dense and demineralized charcoal and coking enhancers are seen as a way to further optimize this technique [19,20].…”

“…Despite such a wide application of thermographic research, it is very rarely used to study agglomeration processes [ 45 ]. The pressurized agglomeration is the key process that is presently employed in the power [ 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 ], heavy [ 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ], chemical [ 59 , 60 ], and pharmaceutical industry [ 61 , 62 , 63 ]. Industries have willingly used roller presses rather than other briquetting machines, for example, screw or punch briquette machines [ 50 , 53 ], due to constant operability with a relatively low demand for energy [ 64 , 65 ].…”

“…The consolidation of fine-grained materials brings many positive economic, ecological and technological aspects [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Modern industry aims at the sustainable use of available raw materials and reduction of the production costs [ 6 ] while reducing the harmfulness of the process to the environment [ 7 ].…”
