Mechanical relaxations of poly(vinylidene fluoride) and some of its copolymers

Abstract: synopsisThe dynamic mechanical properties of poly(viny1idene fluoride) have been studied under isochronal conditions and the effect of thermal treatment examined. The results are compared with a product of different molecular weight distribution. The study also included the mechanical relaxation spectra of copolymers of vinylidene fluoride and chlorotrifluoroethylene at four compositions and four frequencies as a function of temperature. The thermodynamic parameters associated with the main relaxations were de… Show more

“…This was first investigated by Mandelkern et al 363 In contrast, poly(CTFE-co-VDF) copolymers that contain only a small amount of VDF are semicrystalline with a hexagonal structure. 364 Those containing 25−70 mol % VDF are amorphous. Although it has also been recently noted 365 that poly(CTFE-co-VDF) copolymers with more than 16.6 mol % of CTFE units also display an amorphous state (Figure 9).…”

“…On the other hand, poly(VDF-co-CTFE) copolymers with small VDF content is a semicrystalline copolymer with a hexagonal structure 118 , while that containing 25-70 mol. % VDF is amorphous though it has also been more recently noted 119 that poly(VDF-co-CTFE) copolymers containing more than 16.6 mol.…”

“…P(VDF‐CTFE) copolymer with little amounts of VDF is semi‐crystalline, while those containing 25–70 mol% VDF are amorphous. [ 232 ] At higher VDF amounts of greater than 70% thermoplastic copolymers are obtained, known as flexible PVDF. [ 233 ] This copolymer exhibits a higher strain response than PVDF but requires a higher electric field.…”
