Mechanical properties of high‐density polyethylene and crosslinked high‐density polyethylene in crude oil and its components

Abstract: The tensile and stress‐relaxation properties of an uncrosslinked and a loosely silane‐crosslinked high‐density polyethylene exposed to organic “crude‐oil” penetrants were assessed. The measurements were performed on penetrant‐saturated samples, surrounded by the organic liquid throughout the experiment. The penetrant solubilities in the two polymers were similar and in accordance with predicted values based on the solubility parameter method. The stiffness and strength of the swollen samples were significantly… Show more

“…39 Organosilane crosslinked LDPE material is therefore not applicable as barrier polymer compared to the neat PE against the permeation of small hydrocarbons such as n-pentane and toluene. These results were attributed to the presence of organosilanes in the crosslinked PE.…”

“…2 But also low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a commonly used material in oil applications. 2 However, in many applications it must be considered that polyethylene is permeable to gases and liquids. 3 To improve the permeation properties of the polymer, a surface modification by sulfonation or fluorination has been demonstrated.…”

“…Rotationally molded fuel tanks are made of LDPE or crosslinked polyethylene. 2,11 Also in the food industry permeation plays a decisive role regarding the packaging of the groceries. 4 Polyethylene is a thermoplastic material and will lose critical physical properties at elevated temperatures.…”
