Mechanical properties and preferences of natural and artificial leathers, and their classification with a focus on leather for bags

Abstract: In this study, the mechanical properties and preferences of natural and artificial leathers were analyzed. The leathers were classified based on mechanical properties affecting their preferences. The mechanical properties of the leathers were measured via the KES-FB system, and an expert survey was conducted to evaluate leather preference. Leathers possess different mechanical properties depending on the manufacturing process and structural characteristics. Furthermore, differences were observed in the mechani… Show more

“…Based on the protection of animals, good durability and low price, artificial leather has attracted more and more attention as a substitute for natural leather. [1][2][3] Compared to polyvinyl chloride, the chemical structure of polyurethane (PU) is closer to the protein structure of natural leather. 4 Due to the excellent hydrophilicity, polyurethane leather has soft feel and good water vapor permeability without the addition of plasticizer.…”

“…It is superior to natural leather in water resistance, acid and alkali resistance and microorganism resistance, but its air permeability, wear resistance and cold resistance are not as good as that of natural leather. [4][5][6] The surface of synthetic leather is coated with microporous polyurethane (PU), and its base material is a non-woven fabric made of polyester, polypropylene and other synthetic bers. 7 In the eld of synthetic leather, adding lower price llers can not only reduce the cost, but also adjust the microporous structure of the PU lm.…”

“…If in the final dry leather processing allows fine spaces to remain between the fibrils and between fibre bundles than the leather will have a full, soft and flexible handle. Conversely if the processing causes the fibrils and fibres to adhere on drying, then the leather will be firmer and far less flexible [4,9]. Depending on the selection of tanning agents, vegetable, mineral and synthetic tanning agents are most commonly used, as well as their different combinations.…”
