Mechanical Performance of Hybrid Carbon/Fiberglass Composite Laminates Reinforced with Nanoclay

Abstract: The objective of this study was to produce the hybrid carbon/fiberglass composite laminates, to characterize their mechanical properties under room temperature and to evaluate the effect of nanoclay addition into epoxy matrix on the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites. During fabrication of fiber reinforced polymer composites, the organo modified nanoclay (0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1.25% of nanoclay reinforcement by weight) was mixed with epoxy system using an ultrasonic mixer. The produced matrix was th… Show more

“…This can be explained by higher load transferring capability due to the higher interaction between NC particles and epoxy matrix. In the literature, Oner et al [ 46 ] studying the NC effects on mechanical performances of carbon/glass hybrid laminates declared that the appropriate dispersion of NC particles resulted in improved interactions between nanofillers. Further addition of NC particles resulted with the decreases, and also, 3 wt% NC filled samples (350 N) showed lower values than pure ones.…”

“…However, degradation of properties was observed while increasing the weight content of nanoplatelets beyond the critical level. Similarly, the mechanical properties of nanoclay reinforced carbon/glass hybrid composites were evaluated by Oner et al [19]. The outcomes disclosed that the addition of nanoclay enhanced the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites due to improved interactions between the reinforcements and matrix.…”
