Mechanical and thermal stresses in a functionally graded rotating disk with variable thickness due to radially symmetry loads

Abstract: a b s t r a c tRotating disks have many applications in the aerospace industry such as gas turbines and gears. These disks normally work under thermo mechanical loads. Minimizing the weight of such components can help reduce the overall payload in aerospace industry. For this purpose, a rotating functionally graded (FG) disk with variable thickness under a steady temperature field is considered in this paper. Thermo elastic solutions and the weight of the disk are related to the material grading index and the … Show more

“…However, some specific applications (such as solar satellites, solar power towers and solar power heat engines) demand low weight and high temperature resistance to avoid undesirable deformation [2]. Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are designed to be thermal barrier materials for aerospace structural applications and fusion reactors [3]. Flexible properties and high thermal resistance provides suitable stiffness to avoid unsought deformation to better optical alignment.…”

“…Çallıoglu (2008) has studied the stress analysis of the rotating hollow discs made of functionally graded materials under internal and external pressures. Bayat et al (2009) have presented thermoelastic solutions in a rotating functionally graded (FG) disc with variable thickness under a steady temperature field. Kordkheili & Naghdabadi (2007) have investigated a semi-analytical thermoelasticity solution for hollow and solid rotating axisymmetric discs made of FGMs.…”

“…They investigated the constitutive relations of stresses and strains in the thermally loaded rotating variable-thickness elastic disks. Bayat et al [15][16][17][18] dealt with two problems, the elastic and thermoelastic for rotating FG disks at steady temperature. They assumed that the material properties and thickness of the disk are considered according power-law functions of r. Zenkour [19,20] studied the stress distribution in rotating sandwich solid disks with a FG core and isotropic face sheets.…”
