Mechanical and thermal properties of wood‐plastic composites reinforced with hexagonal boron nitride

Abstract: Mechanical, thermal, and morphological properties of injection molded wood-plastic composites (WPCs) prepared from poplar wood flour (50 wt%), thermoplastics (high density polyethlyne or polypropylene) with coupling agent (3 wt%), and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) (2, 4, or 6 wt%) nanopowder were investigated. The flexural and tensile properties of WPCs significantly improved with increasing content of the h-BN. Unlike the tensile and flexural properties, the notched izod impact strength of WPCs decreased wit… Show more

“…Apparently, it is also valid for randomly oriented compressed samples. It is known that the addition of particulate fillers increases the composition's modulus of elasticity [54][55][56][57][58]. It is observed in this work too.…”

“…Wood plastic composites (WPCs) are gaining a great attention in different applications due to their good properties, which include low density, low cost, renewability, and mechanical properties. Apart from this, their exposure to changing environment or contact with aqueous media has made it necessary to evaluate the thermal expansion and water uptake characteristics of these materials [1].…”

“…Some of them are concentrated on the modification of the wood, such as acetylation, silane treatment, thermal treatment, and treatment with sodium hydroxide [3][4][5] . Furthermore, the incorporation of nanoparticles into the WPC as reinforcing filler is another method for improving the overall properties of WPC, such as silica nanopowder, montmorillonite, and hexagonal boron nitride [8][9][10] . However, these methods have their own weaknesses, such as complicated processing processes, high-cost, and easy aggregation of nanoparticles.…”

“…Therefore, it is used in water filters, gas masks and antigastric tablets for people suffering from indigestion 4 . In order to improve the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of WPC, various approaches have been carried out [5][6][7][8][9][10] . Some of them are concentrated on the modification of the wood, such as acetylation, silane treatment, thermal treatment, and treatment with sodium hydroxide [3][4][5] .…”
