[1] Patterns of dike swarms around volcanic centers or above mantle plumes are interpreted by a mechanical analysis of regional and dike-induced stresses, in which dike emplacement is controlled and guided by the stress state. Comparisons of dike patterns with patterns of principal-stress trajectories caused by a source and a regional stress system are commonly used to infer paleostresses. However, dike trajectories are determined by a complex interaction between dike-induced stresses and the source/ regional stress system. We present numerical calculations based on a novel boundary-integral formulation, which examines the simultaneous effects of regional stresses, magma pressure, and dike injection on the local stress state around a continuously curving dike. Dike paths are calculated from the condition that dikes propagate by mode I failure. Our results suggest that the magnitude of the regional stresses would be 2 -5 times higher than previous estimates based on principal-stress trajectory analysis.

▪ Abstract Earth, Venus, and Mars all exhibit populations of giant (radiating, linear, and arcuate) mafic dike swarms hundreds to >2000 km in length. On Earth the dikes are exposed by erosion, while on Venus and Mars their presence is mainly inferred from associated volcanic morphology and surface deformation. The apparent absence of plate tectonics in the geologic record of Venus and Mars means that the observed population of swarms remains geometrically intact, while on Earth plate tectonics has fragmented swarms. About 30 giant radiating swarms have so far been identified on Earth, but with further study the number is expected to rise and may eventually coincide with the hundreds of mantle plume head events now being proposed. On Venus, at least 118 radiating swarms are distributed across the planet, and new high resolution mapping is revealing additional swarms. On Mars, up to 16 giant dike swarms are observed, most associated with the Tharsis region.

We review the numerous experimental studies dedicated to unravelling the physics and dynamics of various parts of a volcanic plumbing system. Section 1 lists the model materials commonly used for model magmas or model rocks. We describe these materials' mechanical properties and discuss their suitability for modelling sub-volcanic processes. Section 2 examines the fundamental concepts of dimensional analysis and similarity in laboratory modelling. We provide a step-by-step explanation of how to apply dimensional analysis to laboratory models in order to identify fundamental physical laws that govern the modelled processes in dimensionless (i.e. scale independent) form. Section 3 summarises and discusses the past applications of laboratory models to understand numerous features of volcanic plumbing systems. These include: dykes, cone sheets, sills, laccoliths, caldera-related structures, ground deformation, magma/fault interactions, and explosive vents. We outline how laboratory models have yielded insights into the main geometric and mechanical controls on the development of each part of the volcanic
