Measuring Multidimensional Vulnerability in Afghanistan

Abstract: Abstract. We show that the credit crisis of OECD countries has a negative impact on the growth of the world economy according to an error correction model including China and Australia. This causes negative growth effects in poor developing countries. The reduced growth has a direct or indirect impact on the convergence issue, aid, remittances, labour force growth, investment and savings, net foreign debt, migration, tax revenues, public expenditure on education and literacy. We estimate dynamic equations of a… Show more

“…The aggregation of the indicator and domain poverty rates to arrive at the overall child poverty rate follows a combination of the union and dual cut-off identification strategy (Roelen et al, 2010). “…The final list of indicators used to gauge deprivation and subsequently profile household vulnerability, broken down by dimension and component, is listed in Table 1. Ahmed and Gassmann, 2010 Following the identification of indicators, we then follow the "dual cut-off" method developed by Alkire and Foster (2011) which first assigns individual thresholds in order to classify a household as deprived or not for a particular indicator, before applying an overall cut-off for both dimensional and multi-dimensional vulnerability. Regarding thresholds, our choices were largely driven by the literature and in line with Ahmed and Gassmann (2010: 11-12), or by the data itself when no clear threshold exists.…”

“…This breakdown into separate internal and external components, while conceptually helpful, is also practical when attempting to operationalize vulnerability as it distinguishes it from the more common poverty measurement (Ahmed & Gassmann, 2010). Given the internal component gauge slow coping ability, it can be measured by the individual's or household' slack of entitlements.…”
