The influence of vulnerability on migration intentions in Afghanistan

Abstract: This study explores the influence of vulnerability on migration intentions within the context of Afghanistan. While it is commonplace to conceptualize migration as being driven by certain economic-related factors, it is reasonable to assume that in an insecure setting like Afghanistan the difference between voluntary and involuntary movement is not easily distinguishable, making it necessary to approach the subject through a spectrum which does not presuppose migration is strictly economic in nature. “…In our theoretical framework migrants' capabilities and aspirations influence both motivations to remit as well as specific determinants of remittances. It should be noted that the most vulnerable do not necessarily have the greatest aspirations or capability to migrate (Loschmann & Siegel, 2014). For example, is many societies, including Bangladesh, a younger male is likely to have greater capabilities and aspirations to emigrate in order to support their family as compared to an older female.…”

“…Individuals lacking capital cannot afford to migrate but likewise financial insecurity can reduce one's 'capacity to aspire' (Carling, 2002;Carling & Schewel, 2017;Czaika & Vothknecht, 2014;de Haas, 2014;Horváth, 2008). Lower income and household vulnerability have been shown to reduce intentions to migrate (Czaika & Vothknecht, 2014;Loschmann & Siegel, 2013). New Economics of Labor Migration (NELM) states that households will diversify income sources based on risk in various markets (Massey et al, 2009;Stark & Bloom, 1985).…”

“…Among them, an extensive group of papers examines the medical personnel's migration intentions (Võrk, Kallaste, Priinits, 2004;Akl, et al, 2008;Imran, et al 2011;Freeman, et al 2012;George, Reardon, 2013;Gouda, et al, 2015). Researchers identify a number of factors related to migration plans and intentions: remittances (Leeves, 2009), the Internet (Vilhelmson, Thulin, 2013;Thulin, Vilhelmson, 2014), characteristics of the respondent's household compared to other households in the local community (Loschmann, Siegel, 2014), and violence against migrants in host countries (Friebel, Gallego, Mendola, 2013). A number of publications demonstrate the importance of age, as well as life stage and life events connected with it (Kley, Mulder, 2010;Elbadawy, 2011).…”
