Measuring Intra-Pixel Sensitivity Variations of a CMOS Image Sensor

Abstract: Some applications in scientific imaging, like spacebased high-precision photometry, benefit from a detailed characterization of the sensitivity variation within a pixel. A detailed map of the intra-pixel sensitivity (IPS) allows to increase the photometric accuracy by correcting for the impact of the tiny sub-pixel movements of the image sensor during integration. This paper reports the measurement of the sub-pixel sensitivity variation and the extraction of the IPS map of a front-side illuminated CMOS image s… Show more

High-end CCDs have almost exclusively been used for this work to mitigate contributions from intra-pixel (Mahato et al 2018) and inter-pixel sensitivity variations (e.g. Southworth et al 2009a,b;Mann et al 2011;Croll et al 2011;Fukui et al 2016) which impact photometric precision.…”

“…Each pixel in a CMOS camera contains its own amplifier and A/D conversion circuit (Howell 2006). Consequently, the dark current and quantum efficiency exhibit nonuniformity between pixels, introducing additional noise that can adversely affect the detection efficiency, photometry, and astrometry accuracy (Mahato et al 2018).…”

“…Therefore, the Wiener or Lucy-Richardson deconvolution technique are often used to calculate IPS [13][14][15][16]. A disadvantage of deconvolution is that the low-amplitude high-frequency components are suppressed and information on small sensitivity variations in the pixel is lost [17]. Then, the model fitting method can also be used to calculate IPS based on the DSPR model.…”

“…Then, the model fitting method can also be used to calculate IPS based on the DSPR model. These include using a Bayesian posterior probability density function to fit the IPS parameter of Euclid Visible Instrument CCD [18] and a forward modeling technique to calculate the IPS of CMOS image sensors [17].…”
