Measuring Intelligence with the Sandia Matrices: Psychometric Review and Recommendations for Free Raven-Like Item Sets

Abstract: The Sandia Matrices are a free alternative to the Raven’s Progressive Matrices (RPMs). This study offers a psychometric review of Sandia Matrices items focused on two of the most commonly investigated issues regarding the RPMs: (a) dimensionality and (b) sex differences. Model-data fit of three alternative factor structures are compared using confirmatory multidimensional item response theory (IRT) analyses, and measurement equivalence analyses are conducted to evaluate potential sex bias. Although results are… Show more

“…Fluid nonverbal reasoning was measured with a short version (10 items) of the Sandia Matrices test (see Harris et al 2020 ; Matzen et al 2010 ), that assesses reasoning abilities with typical figural matrices tasks where one has to understand the patterns in a set of drawings and choose the most appropriate answer (a drawing that continues the pattern) from eight answer options. The internal consistency of the test, measured with Chronbach’s alpha, was α = 0.72.…”

“…In the current study the Self-management scale is negatively correlated to the students' self-evaluations of their perceived difficulty to deal with distance learning (r = −0.12, p < 0.01), indicating the validity of the scale. “…3. Nonverbal reasoning abilities were measured with a short version (10 items) of Sandia Matrices test (see Harris et al, 2020) using figural matrices tasks where the individual has to understand the patterns existing in a set of figures and choose what kind of symbol continues the pattern, internal consistency was α = 0.72. 4.…”

“…Pathfinder-PL with free computerised resources to measure intelligence, such as Sandia (Harris et al, 2020), seems a good idea for future studies. We had, however, good reasons for not involving these measures in our study: first of all, most Polish intelligence tests are not available in computerised versions, and, consequently, they are not tested for online modes.…”
