Measuring fiber orientations in nonwoven web images using corner detection by Bézier fitting curves

Abstract: This paper describes a novel method for measuring fiber orientations in nonwoven web images by using Bézier fitting curves to detect corners of fiber edges and to separate crossing fiber edges. First, the Canny detector was adopted to extract fiber edges. Second, Bézier curve fitting was used to fit each fiber edge for calculating the curvature of every point on the edge. Third, corner points were detected by locating points where the curvatures were minimal on various edges and below the threshold to divide e… Show more

“…The primary goal is to generate keys that remain unchanged or change slightly when the fiber pattern preserving modifications are made to the image. [35][36][37] In the pre-processing phase, an input image is prepared for feature extraction. This step reduces the size of the data that needs to be processed at a later stage, reducing the overall processing time.…”

“…The calculated mean values of the 3D fibre crimp for all six models were nearly the same and were close to unity ( Figure 9 a), meaning that the fibre segments in the studied RFNs were almost straight. The fibres in the first bin (1–1.05) of the histograms were considered nearly straight [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. As expected, the fraction of the straight fibres in the crimped nonwovens was less than the fraction in the non-crimped structures ( Figure 9 b).…”

“…However, one major challenge in the research is the lack of quantitative analysis of helical fiber morphology. Image processing technique, which is a powerful tool to acquire information from images, has been utilized to characterize and analyze nonwovens since the 1990s [18][19][20]. Recently, Moll et al measured fiber orientation of fiber injection molded nonwovens by image analysis [21].…”
