Measuring Enjoyment of Physical Activity in Children: Validation of the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale

Abstract: This study sought to determine the reliability and validity of the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) in elementary school children. The sample consisted of 564 3rd grade students (M age = 8.72 ± .54; 268 male, 296 female) surveyed at the beginning of the fall semester. Results indicated that the PACES displayed good internal consistency and item-total correlations. Confirmatory factor analyses supported a unidimensional factor structure. Scores on the PACES were significantly correlated with task goal … Show more

“…The high scores indicate that the students in this study enjoyed doing PE (regardless of the curriculum or pedagogical style), limiting the scope of the intervention to improve this construct, particularly during the short time frame undertaken. Furthermore, the enjoyment scale used in the student questionnaire (adapted version of the 12-item Factors Influencing the Enjoyment of Physical Education Questionnaire) (Moore et al, 2009) did not specifically target the types of physical activity that the students were involved in, and as a result may not be sensitive enough to detect true intervention effects in this study.…”

“…This measure has demonstrated good internal consistency with Cronbach's coefficients between .80 and .88 (Martens et al, 1990;Liao & Masters, 2002). To keep the nature of the questions hidden, a questionnaire called a "Mental State Survey" was developed in which items from the Cognitive A-State from the CSAI-2 were intermixed with items adapted from the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (Moore et al, 2009). Ratings of perceived physical exertion were obtained using Borg's Ratings of Perceived Exertion Scale (Borg, 1982).…”
