Practice using performance goals enhances basketball free throw accuracy when tested under competition in elite players

Abstract: The present study tested whether practice using a performance goal enhances accuracy when later tested under the demands of a competition outcome goal for a basketball free throw task. Thirty male elite-level basketball players with a mean age of 24.67 years practiced free throws either with or without a performance goal. The performance goal was constructed with the challenge of bettering an individualised accuracy level. Players were later tested under an outcome goal that emphasised performance in an extern… Show more

“…Among four single-subject studies that included specific goals in their procedure, three interventions were effective in improving the targeted outcome (Mellalieu et al, 2006;Vidic & Burton, 2010;Ward & Carnes, 2002), while the other intervention (Zetou et al, 2008) was not. Among six between-subject studies, three studies (Kingston & Hardy, 1997;Lerner et al, 1996;Neumann & Hohnke, 2018) showed that setting specific goals was superior to control groups. Two other studies (Corrêa et al, 2006;Weinberg et al, 1994) showed that setting specific goals did not result in significant improvement than do-your-best goals.…”

“…Four studies described participants as elite, including basketball players (Neumann & Hohnke, 2018;Swain & Jones, 1995), volleyball players (Palao et al, 2016), and runners and swimmers (Wikman et al, 2014). Positive outcomes were demonstrated in all four studies, which included: increases in basketball shooting performance (Neumann & Hohnke, 2018) and basketball skills (Swain & Jones, 1995); improved volleyball skills and engagement with one's team (Palao et al, 2016); and decreased fear of failure (Wikman et al, 2014). The ability levels of the participants in the remaining studies were not explicitly stated.…”

“…An external associative focus may be particularly beneficial given that dissociation can be more difficult to maintain at high levels of exercise intensity. Cognitive strategies like attentional focus may also be integrated with other approaches to promoting physical exercise, like goal setting (e.g., Salehian et al, 2011 ; Neumann and Honke, 2018 ).…”

“…Telah banyak penelitian mengenai accuracy, khususnya pada cabang olahraga bola basket, seperti pada penelitian yang telah dilakukan oleh (Neumann & Hohnke, 2018;Zambova & Macura, 2013) dimana dalam penelitian tersebut komponen accuracy mengalami peningkatan secara signifikan. Tidak seperti penelitian terdahulu yang meneliti accuracy dari segi shooting (free throw dan lay-up), penelitian ini lebih jauh membahas mengenai accuracy passing.…”
