Measuring and Influencing Physical Activity with Smartphone Technology: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Few studies identified in this review considered the validity of phone-based assessment of physical activity. Those that did report on measurement properties found average-to-excellent levels of accuracy for different behaviors. The range of novel and engaging intervention strategies used by smartphones, and user perceptions on their usefulness and viability, highlights the potential such technology has for physical activity promotion. However, intervention effects reported in the extant literature are modest … Show more

“…52 In this study, physical activity was measured using smartphones, which are already in possession by two-thirds of US adults, 29,30 but have not previously been well evaluated. 53 Our study demonstrates that using smartphones for activity tracking may be a scalable method to deploy physical activity interventions in real-word settings.…”

“…consider the experimental design based on randomized control trials (RCT) as an inclusion criteria, which means that all of their primary studies are RCT; ii) on the opposite side, five reviews (Fry and Neff, 2009;Ngo et al, 2009;Lieffers and Hanning, 2012;Bort-Roig, Gilson, Puig-Ribera, Contreras and Trost, 2014;Bardus et al, 2015) do not include RCT; and iii) the remainder reviews consider both RCT and non RCT in the experimental design of their primary studies.…”

“…In low and middle income countries these types of tasks represent an important part of economic activity. 2 However, the validation of physical activity measures and their consistency as a proxy for worker productivity have not been well established (Bort-Roig et al 2014). …”
