• Children deserve to experience a good quality of life (QOL).• We examine three main approaches for understanding children's QOL.• Issues and opportunities in research on children's QOL are discussed.• We conclude social indicators and subjective well-being best capture children's QOL.• QOL should be a universal indicator when we intend to advance well-being of children. a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o The quality of children's life is important both as an investment in the future of our society and because children constitute an important group of themselves and deserve to experience well-being presently. Quality of life (QOL) has been conceptualized and studied in children for several decades, but with disparate approaches that have rarely been discussed jointly with application to children in general. Here we describe and critically examine the three main approaches to children's QOL: health-related QOL (HRQOL), social indicators, and subjective wellbeing (SWB). Although this is not a review of instruments per se, we illustrate these approaches by describing their most prominent measures. Issues and opportunities in research on children's QOL are then discussed related to conceptual clarity, content specification, range of experience, subjective and objective perspectives, development in childhood, reporting source, and malleability of QOL. Finally, directions for advancing children's QOL are considered. We highlight the benefits of focusing on social indicators and SWB, rather than HRQOL, when representing this concept for children in general, the need for applying more sophisticated research strategies, and using QOL as a universal indicator of success whenever we intend to advance the well-being of children through intervention, programs, and policy.

The purpose of this research is to determine the relations between high school students' life satisfaction, burnout, work engagement and hopelessness scores and examine the contribution of their burnout, work engagement and hopelessness scores in the prediction of their life satisfaction scores. The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS), Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-Student Survey (UWES-SS), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) and "Personal Information Form", has been applied on a total of 461 students, 225 (%48.8) of them being girl students and 236 (%51.2) of them being male students, who were continuing the 12th grade in varying high school classes during the 2011-2012 school year within the provincial boundaries of the Mersin Municipality and had voluntarily accepted to participate in the research. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis have been used in the analysis of the data. It is observed as a result of the analyses that high school students' life satisfaction scores have a negative relation with exhaustion, cynicism, efficacy and hopelessness scores; on the other hand, these have a positive relation with vigor, dedication and absorption scores. Also it has been observed that life satisfaction scores only predict hopelessness, absorption and efficacy in a meaningful way.

The aim of this study is to clarify how well-being correlates with autonomic nervous system (sympathovagal) balance in healthy elderly males at home at night awake and resting. The RR-interval and body acceleration of 39 healthy elderly male subjects were recorded with an ambulatory device for 72 hours. The normalized high-frequency (0.15 -0.4 Hz) power (HFnu) of RR-interval variability (sympathovagal balance index) was calculated from 10 min long data sets that satisfied all of the following conditions: 1) average body acceleration was less than 30 mG, 2) the subject was at home, 3) the subject was awake, and 4) more than 95 percent of the time-series of instantaneous heart rate was within 40 to 160 [bpm]. Subjects recorded their subjective well-being level, including life satisfaction level, on a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) questionnaire. We investigated the correlation between the subjective well-being level and mean HFnu. A significant negative correlation between life satisfaction level and mean HFnu (r = −0.47, p = 0.004) was observed. This result implies that sympathovagal balance becomes the predominant state of the sympathetic nervous system in healthy elderly males with relatively high life satisfaction while at home at night awake and resting.
