Measurements of the backscatter matrix of dielectric spheroids

Abstract: Aktroct-Measurements at 2.86GHz of the backscatter matrix of 57 spheroidal samples at all aspect angles in the low-resonance region are presented. Sample size ranges up to ku = 3.4, and axial ratios of 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8 have been used. Dielectric constants include 2.6, 3.3, and 6.5. The presentation is in terms of circular polarization, but the results are readily convertiile to linear (or any other) polarization.

“…A series of measurement on the backscattering cross sections of dielectric bodies was done in [14,15]. Figures 12 and 13 show the comparisons between the theories (NCT and AFCT) and their measurement results at 2.86175 GHz for circular disk samples and rod samples, respectively.…”

“…In the method summarized above, the model scatterer must have symmetry about an axis of rotation and must present smooth surfaces in order that the divergence theorem be applicable and a continuous singlevalued normal be defined at each point. It has been found [Warner, 1978] The scattering properties of oblate spheroidal hailstones at weather radar wavelengths have been computed for a number of equivolumic diameters and axis-diameter ratios [Warner, 1978] and compared to the experimental results of Allan and McCormick [1978]. A generally good agreement is observed.…”
