The health hazards of the radioactive gas radon on general public are well known. In order to understand the level and distribution of 222 Rn concentrations in soil-gas in Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan, a 222 Rn survey was carried out for the first time using RAD7, an electronic radon detector manufactured by Durridge Company (USA), at different locations covering a total area of 10,978 km 2 , having a population of approximately 20 lakh. The measurement of 222 Rn concentration in soil-gas was carried out at four different depths (10, 40, 70, and 100 cm). The radon concentration in soil-gas for 10, 40, 70, and 100 cm depths ranged from 0.09-4.25, 0.15-6.30, 0.50-9.18, and 0.72-10.40 kBq m −3 , respectively. The minimum value of radon concentration is observed in 33 GB village at 10 cm depth and maximum for Mohanpura village at 100 cm depth. As expected, our data show an increase of soil-gas radon concentration levels with depth. The present results are compared with the available radon data from other studies.

Coconut water has several uses that are beneficial to humans, mainly because of its nutritional and medicinal properties. In this study coconut water samples were collected from the fresh mature coconuts and from packaged processed coconut water to measure the radon concentrations in them. The results were used to estimate the annual effective radiation dose to the general adult population from ingestion of coconut water. The samples were analyzed for radon concentrations using the Durridge RAD-7 radon detector. The results of measured radon concentrations for the fresh mature coconut were ranged from 381.10 Bq•m −3 to 1716.80 Bq•m −3 . The results for packaged processed coconut samples ranged from 68.08 Bq•m −3 to 556.85 Bq•m −3 . The mean values for the samples were (1081.40 and 222.78) Bq•m −3 for the fresh and processed samples, respectively. The estimated mean annual effective doses (AED) due to ingestion of coconut water were 0.41 and 0.08 μSv•y −1 for fresh and processed samples, respectively. These values are significantly lower than the safe limits recommended by the World Health Organization and the European Commission of 0.1 mSv•y −1 and the maximum contamination level (MCL) of 11,000 Bq•m −3 by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and so do not constitute a risk to consumers of coconut water.

The thickness and compaction degree of the overburden soil on the beach of the uranium tailings reservoir has an important influence on the radon reduction rate. A theoretical model of radon exhalation is established and an experimental device is designed. The main results are as follows. (1) The radon reduction rate increases with the increase of thickness. When the soil compaction degree is 85.5%, 90.2%, and 94.8%, the radon reduction efficiency increases significantly when the thickness increases from 5 cm to 10 cm, and when the soil thickness is over 10 cm, the increase of radon reduction efficiency tends to be stable. When the compaction degree is 80.9%, the radon reduction rate always increases obviously with the increase of the thickness of the overburden soil, but the increase rate shows a downward trend. (2) The radon reduction rate increases gradually with the increase of compaction degree, and the increasing trend becomes less obvious when the compaction degree is more than 85.5%. Besides, the effect of the change of soil compaction on radon reduction rate decreases with the increase of soil thickness. The calculation formulas about the effect of thickness and compaction degree on radon reduction rate can guide the design and construction of radiation protection of uranium tailings reservoir.
