Measurements of hydrodynamics, sediment, morphology and benthos on Ameland ebb-tidal delta and lower shoreface

Abstract: Abstract. A large-scale field campaign was carried out on the ebb-tidal delta (ETD) of Ameland Inlet, a basin of the Wadden Sea in the Netherlands, as well as on three transects along the Dutch lower shoreface. The data have been obtained over the years 2017–2018. The most intensive campaign at the ETD of Ameland Inlet was in September 2017. With this campaign, as part of KustGenese2.0 (Coastal Genesis 2.0) and SEAWAD, we aim to gain new knowledge on the processes driving sediment transport and benthic species… Show more

“…A field measurement campaign was carried out from August 29 to October 9, 2017, with the goal of characterizing hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes in the inlet and on its ebb-tidal delta (Brakenhoff et al, 2020;De Wit et al, 2019;Reniers et al, 2019;van der Werf et al, 2019;Van Prooijen et al, 2020). Measurements of flow, waves, SPM, bedform dynamics, and water quality were made at four locations across the site.…”

“…The Ameland lower shoreface (DVA) is situated directly offshore the northern part of the ebb tidal delta of Ameland Inlet. It links to the Ameland Inlet field site (AZG) to the south (more information on the AZG campaign can be found in van Prooijen et al (2020) and Brakenhoff et al (2020a)). The Terschelling study area is located directly offshore the central part of the island of Terschelling.…”

“…Part of this program was an extensive field campaign in close collaboration with the Universities of Delft, Utrecht and Twente, via the SEAWAD project. Hydrodynamics, turbidity, sediment composition, bedforms and benthic species distribution were measured at various locations along the Dutch coast (see van Prooijen et al, 2020).…”

“…Observations of near-shore hydrodynamics and bathymetry are used for various purposes: to study and manage the coast [1][2][3], to update early warning systems [4], to monitor swimmer safety [5][6][7], for dredging-and-dumping surveillance [8], and military landing operations [9]. An observation of hydrodynamics or bathymetry with areal coverage, a map, is thereby often beneficial if not a prerequisite to recognize relevant spatial details.…”
