Measurements of Chemical Compositions in Corn Stover and Wheat Straw by Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

Abstract: Rapid, non-destructive methods for determining the biochemical composition of straw are crucial in ruminant diets. In this work, ground samples of corn stover (n = 156) and wheat straw (n = 135) were scanned using near-infrared spectroscopy (instrument NIRS DS2500). Samples were divided into two sets, with one set used for calibration (corn stover, n = 126; wheat straw, n = 108) and the remaining set used for validation (corn stover, n = 30; wheat straw, n = 27). Calibration models were developed utilizing mod… Show more

“…There was insufficient correlation between hemicellulose and NDF ( P > 0.05), whereas it exhibited a negative correlation with ADF ( P > 0.05). These findings contradict prior research, 43 highlighting the need for additional investigation.…”

“…Above all, it was interesting to find that the degrading ability of D1-P to acid-soluble lignin was significantly higher than WT. Although the content of acid-soluble lignin in softwood was very low, it was about 2%–10% in corn stalk ( Guo et al, 2021 ). The structure of ASL also resembles to that of acid-insoluble lignin, meaning the increased degradation ability of D1-P to ASL probably lead to increased degradation ability to ASIL.…”

“…The applications of NIRS in forage have long been investigated by, i.e. Ono et al (2003) Chen et al (2006), Huang et al (2010) and Guo et al (2021) and shows successful results for the analysis of the composition of plant materials.…”
