Measurements and New Vapor Pressure Correlation for HFO-1234ze(E)

Abstract: The vapor pressure of HFO-1234ze(E) (trans-1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene) was measured from 235 to 381 K for pressures from 40 to 3493 kPa using a Burnett apparatus. The temperature measurement uncertainty was estimated to be 2.3 mK, and the pressure uncertainty was estimated to be 600 Pa. A Wagner-type equation was used to correlate the vapor pressure of HFO-1234ze(E) based on the experimental data. This vapor equation has five coefficients and correlates the vapor pressure data of this work with a maximum relat… Show more

“…When compared to the data obtained from REFPROP 9.1, the average absolute relative deviations (AARDs) were 0.32, 0.23, and 0.28% for HFC-134a, HFC-143a, and HFO-1234ze(E), respectively. The vapor pressures in this work combined with the values obtained from the literature ,, were correlated by a Wagner-type equation. The functional form of the Wagner-type equation is given by The comparison between experimental data and the values calculated by the Wagner-type equation is also shown in Table , and the parameters of the Wagner-type equation are listed in Table .…”

“…trans -1,3,3,3-Tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze(E)) has been considered as a promising alternative to 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a) in recent years due to its low global warming potential (GWP) and zero ozone depletion potential (ODP). Research on its thermophysical properties has attracted a lot of attention, and equations of state for HFO-1234ze(E) have been established. However, HFO-1234ze(E) has a lower coefficient of performance (COP) and a lower volumetric refrigeration capacity than HFC-134a, which is mainly caused by the low evaporating pressure and small vaporization enthalpy of HFO-1234ze(E). To offset these drawbacks, mixtures composed of HFO-1234ze(E) with HFCs or HCs have been proposed and some VLE and pvTx properties have been investigated. 1,1,1-Trifluoroethane (HFC-143a) has higher vapor pressures than HFO-1234ze(E) and was mainly used as a component of R404A (0.44 HFC-125 + 0.04 HFC-134a + 0.52 HFC-143a by mass) and R507A (0.5 HFC-125 + 0.5 HFC-143a by mass). Moreover, HFC-143a has the potential to be used as a solvent in supercritical extraction because of its low critical temperature and chemical stability, but it was hardly used as a pure refrigerant individually because of its high GWP of 4470 .…”
