Measurement of the Z/A dependence of neutrino charged-current total cross-sections

Abstract: A relative measurement of total cross-sections is reported for polyethylene, marble, iron, and lead targets for the inclusive charged-current reaction ν µ + N → µ − + X. The targets, passive blocks of ∼ 100 kg each, were exposed simultaneously to the CERN SPS wideband muon-neutrino beam over a period of 18 weeks. Systematic effects due to differences in the neutrino flux and detector efficiency for the different target locations were minimised by changing the position of the four targets on their support about… Show more

“…ApparatUS (CHORUS) [113] was originally a ν µ → ν τ appearance experiment in operation at CERN from 1994 to 1997 [114]. In 1998 the run was exclusively used for differential measurements of neutrino induced CC DIS using the lead-scintillator calorimeter as an active target [115] as well as studying the Z/A dependence of the total CC cross section [116]. The experiment utilized the 450 GeV proton beam from the SPS which was directed to a target producing charged particles.…”
