The ratio of the ionization produced in stopping a fission fragment to the ionization produced in stopping an alpha particle, R, has been measured in the gases helium, argon, and a helium plus 0.25 per cent argon mixture for the most probable light and heavy fragments. Natural uranium was fissioned by fast neutrons from the D,D reaction. The alpha particles were obtained from the U 234 and U 238 . This report has been reproduced directly from the best available copy. particles . were obtained from the u234 and u238.The measurements were made with a parallel-plate gridded electron-collection single chamber. Saturation characteristi1.cs were studied in detail, and small corre.ctipns were made for pulse risetinie differences and grid-shielding inefficiency.Gas purity and electron loss were checked by making absolute average energy per ion pair measurements for alpha particles. Arguments are given which indicate that very little ionization defect is present for fission fragments in the helium plus argon mixture.
