Measurement of surface displacements in 1-3 and 1-1-3 piezocomposites

Abstract: In a piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composite, the piezoceramic and the nonpiezoelectric polymer will have different deformations when subjected to an external electrical or mechanical stimulus. This local, nonuniform deformation eventually determines the overall electromechanical behavior of the composite. In the current investigation, static surface displacements of piezocomposites with 1-3 and 1-1-3 connectivity were measured using a scanning heterodyne laser interferometer. The influence of a thin interlaye… Show more

“…The Young's modulus of a PVS sample is three orders of magnitude lower than that of a Spurr's epoxy resin substrate. 44 Therefore both PVS sample roughness and deformation determine interfacial stress variations, consequently crack initiation, and pull-off. Precise analysis of an elastic fibril adhesion on a rigid substrate based on experimental results, 45 the simplest surface interaction model, 46,47 and finite element simulations predicts: 48…”

“…On the other hand, for piezoelectric actuators, the measurement of surface displacement generated by a pure external electric input is significant for the design of intelligent structures (Li and Sottos, 1996). All of these are involved with the response of elastic fields under an applied electric excitation.…”

“…This locally nonuniform deformation eventually determines the overall electromechanical behavior of the composite. Previous experimental and theoretical work [1][2][3] have demonstrated that significant increases in hydrostatic sensitivity can be achieved by adding a third phase or interlayer around the piezoceramic rod which results in the so-called 1-1-3 piezocomposites.…”

“…In the current work, dynamic displacement profiles are measured on piezocomposite samples with interlayers identical to those used by Li and Sottos. 1 The influence of the interlayer properties on the displacement profiles is investigated as function of driving frequency. Dynamic displacements are compared to the static profiles obtained previously by Li and Sottos.…”
