Measurement of plasma fructosamine evaluated for monitoring diabetes.

Abstract: The mean fructosamine concentration in plasma of diabetics (n = 200) differed significantly (p less than 0.001) from those of a hospitalized nondiabetic population (n = 163)--the latter mean being essentially the same for ambulatory subjects (n = 145), expectant mothers (n = 58), and patients with renal failure (n = 31), regardless of sex. In the diabetic group, values for plasma fructosamine correlated with those for glycated hemoglobin (r = 0.767, p less than 0.01) and glycated protein (r = 0.817, p less tha… Show more

“…Several studies now support the determination of serum fructosamine concentration as a reproducible indication of the intermediate-term metabolic control of diabetics (Johnson, Metcalf and Baker1982;Baker et al 1983;Baker, Johnson and Scott 1984;Baker et al 1985;Hindle, Rostron and Gatt 1985;Lloyd, Nott and Marples 1985). In accordance with previous publications (Baker et al 1983;Baker, Johnson and Scott 1984;Baker et al 1985;Hindle, Rostron and Gatt 1985;Lim and Staley 1985;Lloyd, Nott and Marples 1985;Jury and Dunn 1987) we found a significant correlation of the serum fructosamine level with blood HbAlc, and we did not find a significant difference be-tween type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in terms of this correlation. Of course some individual observations are different (Fig.…”

“…Our results are to be expected as the glycation of Plasma fructosamine iri pregnancy 269 degree of individuality in non-diabetic pregnant women which makes the use of an overall reference range during pregnancy difficult to apply. Plasma fructosamine did not correlate with HbA, ( r = 0.0559, P>O.1) which is in contrast to a previous report (Lim & Staley 1985) that used mixed populations of diabetics and non-diabetics which appears to influcnce the relation of indices of glycation (Winocour et al 1987). The correction of fructosainine with plasma albumin or total protein does not improve the intra-individual variation for the derived measurements.…”

“…Plasma fructosamine is a measure of glycated plasma proteins (Lim & Staley 1985) predominantly albumin (Johnson et al 1986). It is well known that plasma protein and albumin concentrations fall by up to 30% during pregnancy although concentrations of other proteins increase.…”

“…However, it appears to be even less reliable in the detection of subjects with IGT [11]. Most reports on frnctosamine evaluate its use in the monitoring of diabetic control [29,30] and there are few reports of its sensitivity and specificity in screening in the elderly.…”
