Measurement of heterophil antibody and antibodies to EB viral capsid antigen IgG and IgM in suspected cases of infectious mononucleosis.

Abstract: (1972) were also able to demonstrate EB virus IgM in cases of infectious mononucleosis by immunofluorescence. As IgM is the antibody present during acute infection this evidence confirmed the connection between infectious mononucleosis and primary infection with EB virus. This had already been clearly indicated by the work of Niederman et al (1970) in the USA. They studied university student cases of infectious mononucleosis from whom stored pre-illness sera were available. They had found, using the immunoflu… Show more

“…In these patients the PaulBunneil test became positive during their illness and EBV VCA IgM antibody was found. These findings were reported by Blake et al 7 A further 93 sera from healthy adult blood donors were also included in the present study. Sera positive for AIFA of vimentin specificity stained cytoplasmic filamentous bundles collapsed around the nucleus in colchicine treated HEp2 and fibroblast cells, as described previously.8 Those positive for AIFA of prekeratin specificity stained uncollapsed filaments that extended to the cell periphery in HEp2 cells only.…”

“…We enrolled adolescents in the greater Chicago area with monospot-positive acute IM, the presumption being that the vast majority of these cases were caused by Epstein-Barr virus infection (13). The adolescents were identified via school nurses (middle school, high school and college/university), pediatric practices, including the Pediatric Practice Research Group (14) and the Virology Laboratory of Children鈥檚 Memorial Hospital.…”

“…Heterophile antibody (HA) tests are commonly used in the diagnosis of IM, but may lack in sensitivity, especially in children (Sumaya and Ench, 1985), and the antibodies can persist at low levels for up to 1 year (Blake et al, 1976). EBV specific antibody tests are therefore frequently used.…”
