Measurement of atmospheric oxygen using long-path supercontinuum absorption spectroscopy

Abstract: Abstract. The concentration of atmospheric oxygen is measured over a 540-m path using supercontinuum absorption spectroscopy. The absorption data compared favorably with MODTRAN™ 5 simulations of the spectra after adjusting for the differences of index of refraction of air and matching the instrument spectral resolution, as described by the effective slit width. Good agreement with the expected atmospheric oxygen concentration is obtained using a previously developed multiwavelength maximum likelihood estimati… Show more

“…Fiber-based coherent mid-infrared (MIR) supercontinuum (SC) source has important applications in molecular spectroscopy, biomedicine, optical coherence tomography, remote sensing, national defense and security [1][2][3][4][5][6]. To generate MIR-SC, much attention has been paid to non-silica fibers such as tellurite, fluoride, and chalcogenide fibers with low transmission loss in MIR region [7][8][9][10][11][12][13].…”

“…Advances have also been made in detecting trace concentrations of chemical species from industrial and power generation air pollution, biogenic processes, and leaks of methane and other gasses from mining, well drilling, fracking, and from buried natural gas pipelines 14 . Tunable lasers, laser diodes, and broad band supercontinuum lasers have opened opportunities to make measurements atmospheric composition over a wide range of wavelengths [15][16][17][18] . These techniques allow measurements of trace level concentrations of chemical species using the unique spectral signatures resulting from optical scattering and absorption of molecules in gas, liquid, and solid phases.…”
