Sound localization is important for orienting and focusing attention and for segregating sounds from different sources in the environment. In humans, horizontal sound localization mainly relies on interaural differences in sound arrival time and sound level. Despite their perceptual importance, the neural processing of interaural time and level differences (ITDs and ILDs) remains poorly understood. Animal studies suggest that, in the brainstem, ITDs and ILDs are processed independently by different specialized circuits. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether, at higher processing levels, they remain independent or are integrated into a common code of sound laterality. For that, we measured late auditory cortical potentials in response to changes in sound lateralization elicited by perceptually matched changes in ITD and/or ILD. The responses to the ITD and ILD changes exhibited significant morphological differences. At the same time, however, they originated from overlapping areas of the cortex and showed clear evidence for functional coupling. These results suggest that the auditory cortex contains an integrated code of sound laterality, but also retains independent information about ITD and ILD cues. This cue-related information might be used to assess how consistent the cues are, and thus, how likely they would have arisen from the same source.

This article assesses whether the two-alternative forced-choice (2AFC) and the reminder tasks (i.e., method of constant stimuli) yield identical estimates of the difference limen (DL). In a series of six experiments, participants discriminated between two duration stimuli. Experiments 1-5 employed auditory stimuli, and Experiment 6 employed visual stimuli. Experiments 1 and 2 combined each of the two tasks with an adaptive and a nonadaptive procedure for threshold estimation. Experiment 3 varied the distribution of the comparison levels, whereas Experiment 4 employed random interstimulus intervals. Experiments 5 and 6 examined the influence of the presentation order of the standard and comparison stimuli. Results indicate that both the adaptive and the nonadaptive procedures yield virtually identical DL estimates; yet, the 2AFC task produces consistently larger DLs than does the reminder task. In addition, DL increases when the standard occurs in the second rather than in the first stimulus position. In order to account for these results, we assume that participants use an internal standard instead of the actually presented standard as a reference for their judgment.

OBJETIVO: Este estudo investigou o efeito das diferentes taxas de modulações do mascaramento na magnitude do masking release. MÉTODOS: Quinze indivíduos jovens, com audição normal, foram submetidos ao teste de reconhecimento de sentença na presença de ruído, utilizando as listas de sentenças do HINT-Brasil. Foram obtidos limiares de reconhecimento de fala em presença de ruído estável e ruído modulado, em diferentes taxas de modulação (4, 8, 16, 32 e 64 Hz). A magnitude do masking release foi obtida para cada modulação e foi realizada a análise comparativa dos resultados. RESULTADOS: Os achados demonstraram melhores limiares de reconhecimento de sentenças quando o ruído mascarante foi modulado em 4, 8, 16 e 32 Hz e piores limiares quando o ruído mascarante estava estável e em 64 Hz. No que diz respeito à análise da relação sinal/ruído, foram observados, no presente estudo, maiores valores para as tarefas que envolvem reconhecimento de sentenças com ruído estável, seguidos das tarefas que envolvem reconhecimento de sentenças com ruído modulado em 64 Hz, e menores valores para as tarefas que envolvem reconhecimento de sentenças com ruído modulado em 32, 16, 8 e 4 Hz, respectivamente. CONCLUSÃO: A magnitude do masking release para sentenças não se diferencia com taxas de modulação em amplitude entre 4 e 32 Hz. No entanto, quando a taxa de modulação é elevada a 64 Hz, a magnitude do masking release diminui.
