Measurement Invariance of Alabama Parenting Questionnaire Across Age, Gender, Clinical Status, and Informant

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the measurement invariance of the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (for both long [APQ-lg] and short [APQ-9] forms) across age, gender, clinical status, and informant (i.e., parent vs. child reports). The sample was composed of adolescents (community sample: N = 1,746; clinical sample: N = 166) and parents ( N = 149). The analyses were conducted in R. Measurement invariance was assessed via multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, equivalence test, and subsampling approach. The … Show more

“…However, no role for positive parenting emerged in relation to early adolescents' experiences of either parent-related or friendrelated affiliative reward, although we note that positive parenting was highly correlated with parental involvement, corroborating similar findings in the broader literature (e.g. Florean et al, 2022). In this context, experimental studies that directly manipulate different degrees of parental positivity and involvement might be able to shed more light on how these two parenting dimensions operate, jointly or separately, to create an experience of companionship, intimacy, affection, and high worth.…”

“…However, we found a lack of metric invariance. This may be attributed to the different characteristics and clinical status of diseases, which is the common reason for the lack of metric invariance in screening scales 50,51 . On the one hand, radiation therapy has been the most prevalent and efficacious treatment for H&N cancer patients 52,53 .…”

“…This may be attributed to the different characteristics and clinical status of diseases, which is the common reason for the lack of metric invariance in screening scales. 50,51 On the one hand, radiation therapy has been the most prevalent and efficacious treatment for H&N cancer patients. 52,53 Due to the side effects of radiation therapy, such as xerostomia, fibrosis of the oral mucosa and soft tissues, and swallowing difficulties, H&N cancer patients may experience more profound sensations and reactions to issues like jaw movement difficulties, eating challenges, mucosal atrophy, and diminished taste.…”

“…Conversely, variance unique to any one source (i.e., as reflected by informant discrepancies) reflects error, and thus a core assumption underlying use of composite scoring is that estimates of psychological phenomena should emphasize shared or common variance among reports (see Edgeworth, 1888;Borsboom, 2005). This same rationale underlies applications of structural equation modeling (SEM) to integrating or modeling multi-informant data (see also Eid et al, 2008;Watts et al, 2021), combinational algorithms used to integrate data collected within diagnostic interviews (i.e., AND/OR rules; see Offord et al, 1996;Rubio-Stipec et al, 2003;Youngstrom et al, 2003;Valo and Tannock, 2010), and recent applications of measurement invariance techniques to detect informant discrepancies (e.g., Russell et al, 2016;Olino et al, 2018;Murray et al, 2021;Florean et al, 2022).…”
