Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) possesses wide applications as food packaging materials, but is difficult to melt process for its strong inter/intra hydrogen bonding. In this work, flexible PVA films with different content of sorbitol plasticizers were prepared by melt processing with the assistance of water. And the influence of sorbitol plasticizer content on the crystallinity, optical transparency, water-retaining capability, mechanical properties, thermal stability and oxygen and water permeability were investigated. The results indicated that sorbitol dramatically improved the melt processing ability of PVA. Sorbitol could interact with PVA to form strong hydrogen bonding interactions, which would decrease the original hydrogen bonding of the matrix, resulting in the decrease of crystallinity degrees. The glass transition, melting and crystallization peak temperatures decreased with the increase of sorbitol. All the films exhibited fine optical transparency. The water retaining capability were improved with the increase of sorbitol. Especially, an increase in elongation at break and decrease in Young's modulus and tensile strength were observed indicating good plasticizing effect of sorbitol on PVA films. In addition, the PVA films prepared in this work exhibited fine barrier properties against oxygen and water, suggesting wide application potential as packaging materials.

We have developed a solvent-free mechanochemical technology to activate cellulose derived effectively from waste cotton fabrics. A self-designed (pan-mill)-type mechanochemical reactor was adopted to break up the hydrogen bonds and decrease the crystallinity of cellulose through the fairly strong shearing and squeezing forces. The mechanochemically activated waste-derived cellulose (WC) can be used as a costeffective functional additive to enhance the meltprocessability and mechanical properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). With the addition of 20 phr pretreated cellulose, the melting temperature of PVA decreased sharply from its original 212.

This study aims at investigating the quaternary factors, namely zinc di-N-butyl dithiocarbonmate (ZDBC), sulfur, zinc oxide (ZnO), and potassium hydroxide (KOH) on the tensile strength and elongation of chlorinated nitrile latex film. Full factorial design analysis was employed to examine the factors and their combination two-way interactions with the tensile properties. The factors' effect on the variability or the stability of the resulting latex films were analyzed as well. The results showed that KOH, which was used to adjust the pH of the latex system greatly affected the tensile strength of the latex film, whereas sulfur has minor influence on tensile strength. Meanwhile, KOH also interacted in combination with ZnO and sulfur to affect the elongation of the latex films. Addition of KOH changed the pH by affecting the electronic repulsion and gelling stability of the latex matrix. Consequently, the variability in tensile strength and elongation of latex film were according to the amount of KOH. Finally, the simple mathematical models with a regression range 0.73-0.86 were developed to relate the factors and the tensile properties of the latex.
