Effect of Sorbitol Plasticizer on the Structure and Properties of Melt Processed Polyvinyl Alcohol Films

Abstract: Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) possesses wide applications as food packaging materials, but is difficult to melt process for its strong inter/intra hydrogen bonding. In this work, flexible PVA films with different content of sorbitol plasticizers were prepared by melt processing with the assistance of water. And the influence of sorbitol plasticizer content on the crystallinity, optical transparency, water-retaining capability, mechanical properties, thermal stability and oxygen and water permeability were investi… Show more

“…It appears that at low concentrations, RCNPs have plasticizer-like behavior. In contrast to the small molecular plasticizer, which typically increases the elongation of polymers, but decreases the modulus and strength, 61,62 the use of RCNPs does not decrease the strength of the PVA (Fig. 5c).…”

“…Although PALS measures the free volume void size in the amorphous regions in the polymer, insight into these different plasticizing behaviors can be gained from the polymer crystal structure. The characteristic peak at approximately 20° confirms the semi-crystalline nature of the polymer [35]. The apparent crystallite size in the PVA samples, was estimated from the inverse peak width using Scherrer equation, tcrys=kλβcosθ where k is a shape factor for the crystallite, here assumed to be unity, λ is the X-ray wavelength, β is the FWHM peak width determined after linear background subtraction, and θ is the scattering angle of the peak.…”

“…As a kind of biodegradable and eco‐friendly materials, water‐soluble poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has been widely used in various industrial applications, such as biodegradable materials, chemical engineering, and so on . The most important parameters influencing the physical properties of PVA are the molecular weight and alcoholysis degree . Due to the alcoholysis degree, PVA could be divided into 3 kinds with high (98%‐100%), medium (87%‐89%), and low alcoholysis degree (78%) .…”
