Measles virus-specific IgD antibodies in patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Abstract: Indirect immunofluorescent analysis revealed that sera from five patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis possessed IgD antibodies directed against measles virus components in persistently infected HeLa cells. IgD levels in t ese sera were within the normal range. Control studies indicated that the reaction was specific for measles virus.

“…There was a significant positive correlation between the levels of IgD and the titers of complement-fixing antibody to Mycobacterium pneumoniae (149). Specific IgD antibodies were also found in patients with rubella (139), and IgD antibodies to measles virus were found in patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (96). IgD antibodies to diphtheria toxin, Escherichia coli, and streptolysin O were also reported (60,67,143,147).…”

“…10 Secreted IgD binds to viruses (rubella and measles), bacteria ( Escherichia coli , specific surface proteins on H. influenza e and M. catarrhalis ), and selected bacterial virulence factors (e.g., streptolysin O from S. pyogenes , diphtheria toxin). 12, 13 Allergic inflammation can also promote binding of IgD to granulocytes such as neutrophils and eosinophils in the skin. 14, 15 …”
