Maximum Power Point Tracking for Stand‐Alone Wind Energy Conversion System Using FLC‐P&O Method

Abstract: The perturbation and observation method (P&O method) is commonly used for maximum power point tracking in wind energy conversion systems. However, the selection of a suitable step size for this method is the key challenge when employing this technique. To address this, the paper presents a new method, called the FLC-P&O method, in which a combination of fuzzy logic control (FLC) and the conventional P&O method is used. Both simulation and experimental results are presented in order to demonstrate the performan… Show more

“…This method, however, requires sensors to estimate the speed. The FLC approach presented in [37] very well addresses the issue of tracking speed and efficiency trade-off that occurs in CPO. Some advanced soft computing methods like neural networks (NN) and artificial neural networks (ANN) have also been found to be used to eliminate the issues of conventional techniques.…”

“…This issue is addressed in the proposed technique. Figure 4 depicts the relation between V dc and P dc [37] and also gives the selection for the step size for CPO. For an optimal value of V dc , a maximum P dc (MPP) is achieved.…”

“…First is the issue of the trade-off between speed and efficiency, and the second is the wrong direction change under high-speed fluctuations of the wind [35]. Fuzzy logic control (FLC) is clubbed together with the CPO MPPT algorithm [149]. Combining these two improves MPP tracking.…”

“…For standalone electrification applications in remote areas where grid access is expensive or unavailable, off-grid small-size WESs are considered one of the cost-effective solutions in locations where wind energy is abundant 12 , 13 . Yet, some challenging aspects should be considered to maintain high reliability, minimal complexity and reduced cost of the considered decentralized WES.…”
