Maximal lactate steady state concentration (MLSS): experimental and modelling approaches

Abstract: It is assumed that the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) can be used to establish the highest workload that can be maintained over time without continual blood lactate accumulation. In untrained subjects, and in both elite and junior athletes, MLSS occurs at different blood lactate concentrations (BLC) for different exercise modes. This suggests that MLSS depends on the motor pattern of exercise and may be a function of the relationship between power output per unit muscle mass and the mass of the muscle pri… Show more

“…No 10 o e 30 o minuto dos testes foram coletadas amostras de sangue do lóbulo da orelha para a determinação da [La]. A MLSS foi considerada como sendo a mais alta carga na qual foi observado aumento menor ou igual a 1,0mM entre o 10 o e 30 o minuto de exercício, conforme proposto por Beneke (7) .…”

“…Thus, the aerobic capacity (anaerobic threshold), which corresponds to the highest exercise intensity which presents aerobic predominance and is identified by the highest intensity at which balance between lactate production and removal (maximal lactate steady state) occurs, plays an important role in the physical performance of soccer players. The maximal lactate steady state test has been considered gold standard in the identification of the anaerobic threshold, also known as aerobic capacity 13 . However, there are many other procedures which estimate the vLAn in faster, simpler and more valid tests, such as the minimum lactate test used in the present study 8,9,14,15 .…”

“…The total distance covered in the 12-minute test has been used to predict the VO 2max (VO 2max = [distance -504]/45), while Silva et al 7 proposed a linear regression equation to predict the anaerobic threshold velocity (determined with the use of the lactate steady concentration corresponding to 4.0 mmol.l -1 ) using the v12 min. However, the exercise limit time at the intensity corresponding to the anaerobic threshold (maximal lactate steady state, minimal lactate and others) is equal too r higher than 40 minutes, where the maximal lactate steady state test itself uses exercise sessions with 30-minute duration 13 . Thus, the v12 min (maximum distance covered and time ratio) clearly presents value above the vLAn.…”

“…The gold standard protocol for the identification of the metabolic aerobic/anaerobic transition during exercise both for humans and animals is the Maximal Lactate Steady State (MLSS) (20)(21)(22)(23) . The MLSS represents the highest intensity in which blood lactate stabilization occurs during continuous exercise, due to the balance between lactate production and its removal from the blood stream (20)(21)(23)(24) .…”
