Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate auditory cortical development using mismatch negativity (MMN) in pre-lingual severe to profound hearing-impaired children from switching on the cochlear implantation (CI) and 6 months post-CIs Results: Although the MMN incidence was much lower at the periods of M0 and M1, significantly higher MMN incidence was found in M3 and M6. The MMN latencies decreased significantly from M3 to M6, but no significant difference in the amplitudes was found between these periods. There was a negative correlation between the increment of CAP scores and decrement of MMN latency from M3 to M6.Conclusions: MMN incidence increases and latency decreases are likely to be the objective and noninvasive indicators for evaluating auditory central development at an 4 early stage in children post cochlear implantation. Moreover, the latency decreases from M3 to M6 correlated significantly with the increases of the CAP scores, indicating a fast maturation period, which might be a key period for auditory rehabilitation.

Methods:We used an oddball paradigm consisting of a standard tone randomly replaced by one of three infrequent deviants (differing in frequency, sound direction or duration). Results:The P1 and N2 latencies were inversely correlated to age (50-63 months) both in VP Conclusions: Our data suggest a fast maturation of P1 and N2 responses with fast decrease in P1 and N2 latencies around the age of 5 years. Mismatch negativity response does not seem to be a robust measure for defining abnormalities in VP children. Significance:In ERP studies in preschool children, even small, non-significant group differences in age at recording should be corrected for. Very preterm born children at preschool age have aERP patterns as earlier described in full-term born children with cognitive deficits. 4

Abstract: Maturation of speech discrimination, as indexed by MMN, occurs more rapidly between 4 and 7 yrs of age for vowels than for tones. A p-MMR preceding the MMN also reflects discrimination in younger children and declines in amplitude with age.
