“…It is known that virgin and mated females of G. morsitans mature their first oocyte at the same rate, while it is the growth of the second oocyte in virgins which is inhibited (Saunders, 1970). Since ovulation in virgins is delayed (Saunders, 1970;Saunders & Dodd, 1972), and since in other flies the growth of ovaries may be inhibited by the presence of mature eggs (Adams et al, 1968;Meola & Lea, 1972), there is thus no evidence so far that the ca is necessarily involved in the control of oocyte growth. Moreover, Sarcophaga does not depend on the ca as the source of a gonadotropin, but as a source of a hormone which controls the general level of protein synthesis (Wilkens, 1969).…”
