Mathematics learning instrument using augmented reality for learning 3D geometry

Abstract: Augmented Reality (AR) is one kind of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies that can be used to help students who have difficulties to imagine geometrical objects in three-dimension way. AR can be applied in mobile learning which will improve the efficiency and effectiveness in learning process. The aim of this study was to develop the mathematics learning instruments using AR for secondary students. The methodology that used in this study was research and development. Sketchup software is used to draw geometrical… Show more

“…Unity3D engine and Vuforia plugin made the tasks easier using camera tracking [25] although previously tested to a small group of students demands further investigation. QR code based tracking method was an old method in this context still attracts researchers since these are quick and easy to implement [26]. However, with the aspects of language, contents, and design QR based tracking requires further validation.…”

“…In these cases, first step is to choose the target participants, users or students, then making prototypes and improving it further [20] [21] [23] [25] [45]. Testing into small groups first and then to a broader range of participants also brings out better results for research [26].…”

“…In the recent years, object tracking based on camera becomes suitable due to updated technology such as Unity3D engine and Vuforia augmented reality plugin (Nazar et al, 2020). QR code based object tracking is also fascinated by research due to quick and user friendly implementation and validation, however, tracking by this plat is considered old now a days (Auliya and Munasiah, 2019) comparing with Unity3D engine and Vuforia augmented reality plugin. Structure from Motion pipeline (SFM), Perspective Geometry and Surface tracking are also considered as another subset of augmented reality (Nakashima et al, 2015;Samini and Palmerius, 2014;Nakashima et al, 2013;.…”

“…However, most of the applications discussed do not deal with vector geometry, but with other various mathematical topics. Six of such articles/applications were examined [32][33][34][35][36][37], and their main characteristics and findings regrouped in Table 1. All are fairly recent and were done in different countries, which shows the rising popularity of this topic worldwide.…”

“…For the registration process of the virtual objects and the tracking of the marker, the AR software development kit Vuforia [35] was used. The application is implemented as a mobile application and is available to download for android devices (cleARmaths can be downloaded from the Google Play Store [36] or on the cleARmaths website [39]).…”
