Mathematical links between optimum solar collector tilts in isotropic sky for intercepting maximum solar irradiance

In this work, solar radiation availability has been estimated for south‐facing inclined surfaces in India. Five different climatic zones prescribed by Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) for India have been considered. A comparison of optimum tilt angles and corresponding incident solar radiation for representative locations under different climatic zones, that is, Srinagar (cold), Delhi (composite), Jodhpur (hot and dry), Mumbai (warm and humid), and Bangalore (Temperate) has been established. Gains in the availability of incident solar radiation in comparison with a horizontal surface observed for Jodhpur and Bangalore were found to be maximum (15.77%) and minimum (7.57%), respectively, on monthly optimum tilt angle. A loss of 5.74% for cold climate, 7.49% for composite climate, 6.16% for hot and dry climate, 4.30% for warm and humid climate, and 4.39% for temperate climate were estimated with surface tilted at annual optimum tilt in comparison with a surface at monthly optimum tilt angle. A linear relationship was observed between annual optimum tilt angles and locations latitude as βopt(annual) = 0.671 ϕ + 9.087 with R2 = 0.9984. Abstract:The tilt angle with the horizon (with respect to the ground) of the solar energy system affects the amount of solar radiation received. This paper suggests a simple and universal method to obtain the optimum tilt angles by estimating the monthly mean daily global solar radiation on tilted surfaces facing directly towards the equator, which is based on monthly average daily global solar radiation data produced from Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) data. The monthly, seasonal, and yearly optimum tilt angles for photovoltaic panels are calculated at six stations of different climatic types (Tropical Zone (TZ), Subtropical Zone (SZ), Warm Temperate Zone (WTZ), Mid Temperate Zone (MTZ), Cold Temperate Zone (CTZ) and Tibetan Plateau Zone (TPZ)). The results indicate that changing the monthly, seasonal, and yearly optimum tilt angles causes a significant yearly gain in the solar radiation for the region. In addition, general correlations are generated to estimate the optimum tilt angle of solar collectors at six typical climatic stations of China. The performances of the proposed models are compared using statistical error tests such as the mean absolute bias error (MABE), the root mean square error (RMSE) and the correlation coefficients (R).

Abstract:A simple effect one stage ammonia-water absorption cooling system fueled by solar energy is analyzed. The considered system is composed by a parabolic trough collector concentrating solar energy into a tubular receiver for heating water. This is stored in a fully mixed thermal storage tank and used in the vapor generator of the absorption cooling system. Time dependent cooling load is considered for the air conditioning of a residential two-storey house. A parametric study is performed to analyze the operation stability of the cooling system with respect to solar collector and storage tank dimensions. The results emphasized that there is a specific storage tank dimension associated to a specific solar collector dimension that could ensure the longest continuous startup operation of the cooling system when constant mass flow rates inside the system are assumed.
