Math and Mate in Javanese Primbon: Ethnomathematics Study

Abstract: Marriage is an essential part of life for most people. In the Javanese tradition, great attention is paid to the weton of the couple through Javanese Primbon. It predicts the fate of the couple in the marriage. This prediction of the Javanese outcome after the wedding has some numerical values. Therefore, this study aims to uncover these numerical values using ethnomathematics. This research uses a qualitative method. Analyzing the Javanese Primbon documents is meant to explore the numerical value of Javanese … Show more

“…In Javanese society, the term neptu or weton is also defined as the day of one's birth, which is This neptu calculation is usually used by Javanese people to predict human characteristics, a good day for making events, a good day for traveling, a good day for marriage, predicting compatibility of a prospective spouse, job suitability, and so on. The results of this prediction are written in a book called the Primbon Book, which is a book of ancestral heritage that contains predictions and teachings that come from the relationship between life and the universe (Utami, Sayuti, & Jailani, 2019). A number of these predictions are still used in Javanese society.…”

“…Addition to day = Mourn day (mod 7)-1 In predicting the pasaran day of the deceased one, we apply mathematical modeling integrating modulo 5. Therefore, for those days in a year n which is divisible by five, and it has remainder five (Utami, Sayuti, & Jailani, 2019). The remaining is then subtracted by one because we don't take the deceased day into account.…”
