Maternal vitamin D and E intakes during pregnancy are associated with asthma in children

Abstract: Are maternal vitamin D and E intakes during pregnancy associated with asthma in 10-yearold children? In a longitudinal study of 1924 children born to women recruited during pregnancy, maternal vitamin D intake during pregnancy was assessed by the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and vitamin E by FFQ and plasma α-tocopherol; respiratory questionnaires were completed for the 10-year-old children. Their treatment for asthma was also ascertained using administrative data. Longitudinal analyses included data colle… Show more

“…Some of the most important factors linking asthma with obesity are birth weight, both low and high (49) , and breast-feeding (62) . In addition, poor maternal diet, low in micronutrients such as vitamins D, E and C, and maternal weight gain during pregnancy were shown to increase the chances of the offspring having asthma and/or obesity later in life (91)(92)(93)(94)(95) . These factors could contribute to the coexistence of these two conditions (86) ; however, the evidence is rather ambiguous.…”

“…This study adds to a growing list of very recent longitudinal studies examining the role of vitamin E levels in the development of childhood asthma, and unfortunately, the results have been conflicting (16,17). Prior to embarking on a large-scale interventional trial of a-tocopherol supplementation to prevent asthma-a massive endeavor-this study should be replicated in another patient population.…”
