Maternal sensitivity: a concept analysis

Abstract: A clear understanding of the concept of maternal sensitivity could be useful for developing ways to enhance maternal sensitivity and to maximize the developmental potential of infants. Knowledge of the attributes of maternal sensitivity identified in this concept analysis may be helpful for constructing measuring items or dimensions.

“…For example, maternal sensitivity is dependent on a mother's ability to perceive and respond appropriately to her infant's emotional displays (Eisenberg et al, 1998;Shin, Park, Ryu, & Seomun, 2008;van Doesum et al, 2007). This review suggests that mothers with depression are more likely to perceive negativity in infant faces, and those with depression and anxiety symptoms have a heightened sensitivity towards negative emotions, as well as have difficulty identifying positive emotions.…”

“…29 Women experiencing negative mood are less likely to show positive mothering behaviors, and are less sensitive to infant needs. 30 The decreased quality of mother-infant interaction may lead to suboptimal infant attachment, 31 placing infants at risk for poor development. 32 While there are well-known predictors of postpartum negative mood (e.g., poor social support, stressful/adverse life events, and history of depression/anxiety), subjective and objective birth variables (i.e., complications, mode of delivery, increased use of interventions, and maternal perception of the experience) also may be predictors of maternal outcome.…”
