Maternal prolactin secretion during labor. The role of dopamine

Abstract: The different PRL values between the three groups show that maternal PRL is still under dopaminergic influence during labor. However, the fact that PRL levels exhibit the same multiphasic pattern, suggests that there are factors other than dopamine, which strongly influence this pattern.

“…In particular, an over-expression of NRG1 in transgenic mice [ 31 ] led to changes in dopamine metabolism. Stefos et al [ 32 ] showed that dopamine inhibited prolactin secretion both during labour and post-partum. Another dopamine function was related to the production of stress hormones such as adrenaline.…”

“…Previous studies demonstrated that serum PRL concentrations undergo rapid changes during delivery [48] , but the exact pattern still remains to be elucidated. Interestingly, PRL was found to have a dopaminergic influence during labor [49] , and a role in regulatory immune responses was noted in animal models [50] .…”

“…Third is the antiemetic effect 22. [Last,] metoclopramide-induced hyperprolactinemia could potentially enhance the onset of breastfeeding, although this is questionable 23. Because unnecessary frequent vaginal examinations are not convenient to the patient and increase the risks of ascending infection, 1-2 hours intervals for repeat vaginal examination were chosen in accordance with the standard hospital intrapartum management protocol.…”
