Adipose tissue, one type of loose connective tissue in the human body, maintains the primary task of energy storage. Adipose tissue is not only an energy reservoir but also plays a vital role as the largest endocrine organ of the whole body via releasing a variety of adipokines, which participate in many pathophysiological processes, such as energy metabolism regulation, glucose and lipid metabolism, and inflammation. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder that mainly involves the female reproductive system, affecting women of childbearing age particularly. Insulin resistance (IR) and hyperandrogenemia (HA) have been implicated as a critical link involving the etiology and outcome of PCOS. A great deal of studies has bridged the gap between adipokines (such as Adiponectin, Chemerin, Metrnl, Apelin, Resistin, Visfatin, Leptin, Vaspin, Lipocalin 2, and Omentin) and reproductive fitness. In this review, we will focus on the adipokines’ functions on PCOS and come up with some points of view on the basis of current research.

Insulin resistance and decreased spexin in Indian Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Spexin is novel biomarker, which plays a potential role in glucose and lipid metabolisms. However, there was paucity of serum spexin levels in obesity and diabetes mellitus subjects. Hence the current study was aimed to find the relationship between the serum spexin levels in type 2 Diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM) with extrapolation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. A cross-sectional study included 330 participants, subdivided as control (n=110), type 2 DM (n=110) and type 2 DM with CVD groups (n=110). HbA1c, insulin, lipid profile, spexin & leptin including blood pressure and body mass index were analyzed from all the participants. The serum spexin levels (ng/ml) were significantly decreased in type 2 DM (mean ą sd: 0.65 ą 0.03) and type 2 DM with CVD (0.48 ą 0.02) groups compared to the control (0.79 ą 0.03) group (p<0.001). The decreased spexin levels were observed in type 2 DM, and further more decreased in type 2 DM with CVD patients compared to controls indicating that spexin levels could be served as an early prediction of obesity-induced T2DM with CVD risk.

Alarin has been reported to ameliorate insulin resistance in type 2 diabetis mellitus. However, until now, there is no report examined the relationship between alarin and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the level of alarin in subjects with and without gestational diabetes mellitus. 30 healthy and 30 gestational diabetes mellitus subjects were recruited for this study. A 2-hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed at 24-28 weeks of pregnancy. GDM were diagnosed using nationally endorsed criteria (fasting [FPG], 1-or 2-hour blood glucose [at least one abnormal value]. Plasma alarin level was measured by ELISA. Plasma alarin levels were significantly higher GDM subjects than in healthy individuals (12. 3±1.4 ng/mL vs 7.8±0.8 ng/mL; p < .05).1-(18. 8±1.9 ng/mL) and 2-hour (24. 2±3.1 ng/mL) alarin levels in women with GDM were significantly increased at OGTT compared with women without GDM [1-(9.4±0.9 ng/mL); 2-(9.7±0.6 ng/mL)]. Plasma alarin positively correlated with FBG, HbA1c, HOMA-IR and insulin). The above results suggest that alarin might be associated in the pathogenesis of gestational diabetes mellitus.
