Material properties of titanium diboride

Abstract: The physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of polycrystalline TiB2 are examined with an emphasis on the significant dependence of the properties on the density and grain size of the material specimens. Using trend analysis, property relations, and interpolation methods, a coherent set of trend values for the properties of polycrystalline TiB2 is determined for a mass fraction of TiB2 ⩾ 98 %, a density of (4.5±0.1) g/cm3, and a mean grain size of (9±1) µm.

“…This is caused by the 1.7 vol.-% metal oxide particles used, which has a much higher Young's modulus 90.1 GPa [37] than epoxy. The modulus improvement by u-Gd 2 O 3 is similar to that by m-Gd 2 O 3 , implying little effect of interface modification on matrix stiffness.…”

“…The density of Gd 2 O 3 is 7.1 g Á cm À3 ; [37] the density of matrix is assumed as 1.1 g Á cm À3 . Thus, 10 wt.-% of epoxy/Gd 2 O 3 nanocomposite is equivalent to 1.7 vol.-% nanocomposite.…”

“…In these applications, the material's high hardness, high melting point, good electrical conductivity, and acid and radiation stability is exploited. 8 The discovery of superconductivity in MgB 2 at 39 K by Akimitsu 9 has lead to booming activity in the physics community and activated a search for superconductivity in other diborides. Natural candidates for this search are AB 2 -type light metal diborides (A = Li, Be, Al).…”

“…Evaporators, crucibles, nozzles, cutting tools and wear resistant coatings are among the articles manufactured from titanium diboride using the specific methods of the powder metallurgy [ 4,5 ]. An important application is the use of TiB 2 cathodes in the electrochemical reduction of alumina to aluminum metal [ 6 ]. The TiB 2 is one of the promising armour application ceramics for both personnel and vehicle protection offering most of the required properties as high hardness, compressive strength, elastic modulus and ballistic efficiency [ 7 ].…”
