Match Statistics as Predictors of Team’s Performance in Elite competitive Handball. [Estadística del partido como predictor del rendimiento de equipo en el balonmano de élite].

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to identify performance indicators able to predict victory in a handball match. A documental research was carried out based on data from 80 matches from the Men's Handball World Championship, held in Qatar in 2015. Data was obtained from the International Handball Federation website. Reliability was determined through intra and inter-observer agreement. Our results show that the combination of attack, defense, and goalkeeper indicators adequately predicted winning a match. Spec… Show more

“…In handball game analysis, the positional game in numerical equality is often what determines the winner or loser of the match (Gutiérrez-Aguilar et al, 2010). Due to this trend in the game, it is possible that for elite teams, with a structured game form, the success of the match is determined by counterattacks (Daza et al, 2017;Saavedra et al, 2017;Jarque & Foguet, 2012). Thus, after the analysis of goals in counterattacks, we found no significant differences between the number of goals against teams that used or did not use the goalkeeper substitution in numerical equality, inferiority, or superiority.…”

“…Notational analysis is a powerful approach to evaluate both individual's and teams' performances, providing information for training and competitions (Bilge, 2012;Gómez-Ruano, 2017). This approach allows researchers to obtain data on tactical organization, assisting in the development of teaching and learning methodologies for team sports, facilitating comparative analysis of teams and players, examining the interactions between players and their individual skill elements with the game, improving the quality of educational interventions, and contributing to the teams' strategic-tactical performances (Daza, Andrés, & Tarragós, 2017;Prieto, Goméz, & Sampaio, 2015a). Therefore, information from game analysis has assisted in the identification of actions and situations that significantly influence the final result in handball matches (Daza et al, 2017;Debanne, 2017;Karastergios, Skandalis, Zapartidis, & Hatzimanouil, 2017).…”

“…The most important module of his method is the training of the ability of the goalkeepers to "read" all the relevant gaming situations [5,28,40,43]. In the German Bundesliga, in recent years, Michael Bigler has developed a method of "training force pressure" -an innovative approach to defence training to better meet the current complex defensive requirements of competitive handball games, including training with protective pressure and training with attacking pressure [28,31,44,45]. Allan Quintallet, Coach for Physical Training, has made a significant contribution to the achievement of handball players in France.…”

“…Game analysis is an important procedure that provides athletes and teams with information, guides training and performance in competitions (Bilge, 2012;Daza et al, 2017) provides data on tactical organization, technical performance and helps to develop teaching methods by improving the quality of coaches interventions and influencing the strategic-tactical performance of the teams (Bilge, 2012;Karastergios et al, 2017;Prieto et al, 2015b). Specifically, in handball, studies indicate that the effectiveness of group tactical actions is associated with a game played with greater depth of the playing space (Prieto et al, 2015b;Rogulj et al, 2011) and that fast counterattacks and the throw area are predictive factors of success in the attack (Gómez et al, 2014).…”
