Utilizing the structural approach of the Social Representations Theory, which allows an order and understanding of the reality lived by individuals/groups, this study intends to identify the central nucleus and peripheral systems of the Social Representations of Vitiligo, as well as the representational structure of the self-image that people with the aff ection possess. For this, 370 Brazilians with Vitiligo from all regions of Brazil, aged from 18 to 67 (M=35.71, SD=12.11) and predominantly female (80.7%), were enrolled in a study through the online completion of a social-demographic questionnaire and the Free Word Association Technique (FWAT). In the FWAT, participants' responses were stimulated using the inductors "Vitiligo" and "Myself", the latter being related to the self-perception that the person with the disease experiences. The data were analyzed using prototypical lexicographic analysis, performed by the Evocation 2000 software. The results indicated, from the prominence of psychosocial evocations in the representational structure of Vitiligo and the participants' self-image, that Vitiligo's eff ects are not restricted to the skin, but overlap and negatively aff ect the social experience and self-concept of people with the disease.

Prejudice against people with Vitiligo is pervasive across societies. However, little attention has been given to measuring individual differences on the way that it is expressed. To overcome this gap, we developed and validated the Scale of Prejudice towards People with Vitiligo (SPV) throughout six online studies. Studies 1a and 1b (N = 136) addressed the development of the SPV's items, their content and semantic validity. Study 2 (N = 121) showed that its nine items are organized into three correlated factors (cognitive, behavioral, and affective) with high internal consistency. Studies 3a and 3b (N = 386) confirmed this factor's structure using confirmatory factor analysis, and explored the convergent-discriminant validity of the instrument. Study 4 (N = 417) replicated these findings and demonstrated the SPV's configural, metric, and scalar invariance between two experimentally manipulated target-groups: Black person with Vitiligo versus White person with Vitiligo. Results also showed experimental criterion validity, in that participants scored higher on SPV in the Black (vs. White) Vitiligo condition. Furthermore, results revealed that the higher the social contact with people with Vitiligo, the lower the prejudice expressed towards this population. When combined, these findings are the first to document the correlational and experimental evidence of a measure of prejudice towards individuals with Vitiligo.

O vitiligo é uma doença cutânea crônica caracterizada por despigmentação da pele e que acomete muitas mulheres. O presente estudo tem como objetivo identificar os impactos do vitiligo na imagem da mulher, seus tratamentos e os principais cuidados de enfermagem. Trata-se de uma revisão narrativa de literatura ocorrida nos meses de fevereiro e março de 2021 nas bases de dados da Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde, SciELO, Google Scholar e repositórios universitários. Optou-se por analisar os resultados por meio de três categorias: O padrão de beleza feminina e o vitiligo; O tratamento do vitiligo e; Cuidados de enfermagem à mulher com vitiligo. Conclui-se que o vitiligo pode afetar diretamente a autoestima e autoimagem da mulher devido aos padrões de beleza que a sociedade impõe ao sexo feminino. Apesar de existirem diferentes tratamentos, faz-se necessário novos estudos sobre os cuidados de enfermagem à mulher com vitiligo para garantir uma assistência de excelência e qualidade.
