Mastocytosis: A Review

Abstract: Mastocytosis refers to a spectrum of clinical and laboratory abnormalities attributable to tissue infiltration by large numbers of mast cells and to the discharge of various biologically active substances by these cells. It most commonly results in cutaneous manifestations during childhood but may develop at any age or involve almost any organ system. The treatment of mastocytosis has become considerably more practicable in recent years with the availability of agents that directly inhibit mast cells or tempor… Show more

“…nausea and/or vomiting and diar rhea. Other patients have been suffering from abdominal cramps and, in case of bone involvement, of bone pains [ 1,2). These various manifestations are persumably due to the release of metabolic products of mast cells, the known prin ciple of which is histamine, but also heparine.…”

“…Mastocytosis represents a spectrum of related diseases characterized by local or systemic proliferation of mast cells [1,2]. Telangiectasia macularis eruptiva perstans (TMEP) is a telangiectatic variety of urticaria pigmentosa in adults.…”

“…CM is divided into three major subtypes: urticaria pigmentosa (UP), mastocytoma, and diffuse cutaneous mastocytosis (DCM). Approximately 58∼90% of patients with CM have the UP subtype, while 10∼40% of affected patients have mastocytoma [5][6][7] . DCM is the rarest subtype, accounting for only 1.74% of all cases of CM 5 .…”
