Mastalgia in Daily Practice

Abstract: Objective: Mastalgia is a common complaint encountered in polyclinics. The causative pathologies of mastalgia are either because of the breast or other regions. “…Considering that non-cyclic pain mostly develops in post-menopausal patients, the results of our study are consistent with the literature (7). On the other hand, the study by Kızılkaya et al (16) identified malignancies in two out of 530 patients with only mastalgia symptoms and both these patients described non-cyclic pain in the pre-menopausal period. In a study performed by Fariselli et al (17) in Italy with 200 patients, only 5 out of patients who had no physical examination findings and described only local mastalgia were identified to have sub-clinical cancer.…”

“…An association between mastalgia and increased breast density has been accounted for [11]. Benign breast disorders are significantly associated with mastalgia [12] and public awareness of breast cancer has led to a steady flow of frightened females attending surgical outpatient clinics, with complaints of cyclical mastalgia, nodularity, or asymmetry, but a small proportion will indeed present with breast lumps [13].…”
